Default Settings Based on Grade Level

Updated for 2026-27

To help make MathFactLab more accessible for our youngest students, some of our default response rates vary by grade level.

  • Teachers can always override our default settings to better meet student needs.
  • If a student in K-3 has demonstrated fluency at our default rate, we encourage teachers/parents to lower the response rate by a second and reassess the student.

Default Response Rates by Grade Level

Grade Level Default Response Rate
K 7 seconds
1 and  2 6 seconds
3 5 seconds
4+ 4 seconds

If students have not been assigned a grade level in MathFactLab, their default response rate will be 5 seconds.

Default Strategy View for Students in Kindergarten and First Grade

To keep things simple for our youngest students, by default, students in kindergarten and first grade practice basic addition and subtraction facts only with our ten frames activities: Ten Frames addition, Ten Frames subtraction, and Missing Addend. Activities using other models, such as number lines, number racks, and double-bar diagrams, are hidden by default.

To override this default setting, please see Hiding and Restoring Addition and Subtraction Activities.

Default Placement Test Warmups for Kindergarten and First Grade

  • Kindergarten and Grade 1 students are given an age-appropriate set of numbers to type, almost all single-digit: 3, 8, 5, 1, 9, 4, 7, 2, 6, and10
  • For students above Grade 1, or when no grade is assigned, the majority of the warm-up numbers will be double-digit.
