How can students see which fact families they are studying?
Student will find it helpful to see all of the fact families they will encounter at each level. Fact families deepen understanding of number relationships, enhance mental math and problem-solving skills, and reinforce the concept of inverse operations, such as addition reversing subtraction and multiplication reversing division. For example, the numbers in the 6, 4, and 10 fact family can create these four addition and subtraction equations:
6 + 4 = 10
4 + 6 = 10
10 - 6 = 4
10 - 4 = 6
MathFactLab may have as many as 20 different fact families on a single level.
The MathFactLab Progress Tables make it easy for a students to see the fact families for the level they are working on as well as the levels they have mastered and the levels the will be working on later. Each fact family is grouped within a triangle.
In addition to having their teacher use the MathFactLab Progress Tables during instruction, there are a number of ways for students to see these fact families while working in MathFactLab:
Placement Test Progress Table
After completing either the addition/subtraction or the multiplication/division placement test students are shown a progress table that displays their assigned level within the program.
Logging into MathFactLab
Whenever a student logs into MathFactLab they will first see the progress table where they can examine the fact families for the current lesson.
Printed Progress Tables
Teachers can download Progress Tables to print out for student use. One version of these printable table is uncolored so students color them themselves. This document explains the steps for printing Progress Tables.
