Does MathFactLab automatically switch students to the multiplication/division mode after they have completed all the addition/subtraction levels?
Students DO NOT automatically switch to the multiplication/division mode after completing all the addition/subtraction levels. Switching between Learning Modes must be done by a teacher or an administrator. No data is lost when switching between these modes. (This document and video explain the steps for changing Learning Modes.)
How can we set up our students to be able to use Google single sign-on?
Currently students need to be rostered with our CSV bulk upload tool in order to have access to Google SSO. These would be students who are part of a school/district account that is manually rostered. Student Google-based email addresses are required to be given as the students' usernames. See this guide for manually rostering students. This option is not available for students rostered using Clever or Classlink or for students on our Teacher of Family plans.
How can an administrator see student usernames and passwords?
MathFactLab Administrators and teachers can export a CSV file that will include, along with additional information, the usernames and passwords for all the students currenting displayed in the Students window. Instructions for exporting a CSV file are found here.
Administrators and teachers can also generate login cards for all the students in their account which will include each student's username and password, as well as their class code and a QR code for students who may find it an easier method for logging in. These are the instructions for generating login cards.
To quickly see an individual student's log-in credentials an administrator or teacher can check the Informative side of the Students tab. Each student's username is listed and clicking on the hidden password will reveal it. Going to a student's 'Edit Student' pop-up window will also show a single student's username and password.
Which tasks must be done by a super-administrator or a sub-admin and which can be done by the teachers themselves?
This list of school account permissions by role details the tasks allocated to teachers, super-administrators and sub-administrators. You will see there are two sections in this document because sub-administrators have three fewer permissions if their school/district account is integrated using Clever or ClassLink. In general, teachers are able to take care of tasks focused on their students including accessing teaching tools, changing student settings when necessary and monitoring their students' progress and running reports for their class. Administrators can also complete these tasks but their access is broader so they can manage the entire school or district. Administrators and not teachers can view and modify all the schools, teachers, classes and students that are included in their MathFactLab account.
Is there a simple way for younger students to log into MathFactLab?
This is intended for schools who are not using Clever or ClassLink integration.
These two methods for logging in are especially friendly for younger students.
-
Google SSO - If a student's class is part of a school or district account and the students have Google accounts they can be set up to use Google Single Sign-on. This would require student Google-based email addresses be given as the students' usernames. This approach is not currently available for students on our Teacher or Family plans.
-
QR code login cards - Teachers can print login cards that have QR codes which students can hold up in front of their device's camera to log in. Students will click on the 'Sign In with QR Code' link on the MathFactLab login page and allow the program to use their camera, if asked. This method works for students who are part of either a school/district or teacher plan.
Can teachers and administrators see student performance on the placement tests?
Yes, Placement Test Reports are available at any time for both the addition/subtraction and the multiplication/division learning modes. These reports provide question-by-question results from individual placement tests including the number of seconds it took the student to answer each question. If a student retakes a placement test the report will show the student's performance on most recent test.
These reports may be downloaded as CSV or PDF files.
More information go to Placement Tests and Placement Test Reports.
How can teachers and students see all the levels to be mastered in both learning modes?
Teachers can view and share digital or printed version of the MathFactLab progress tables. These tables show every level in both the addition/subtraction and multiplication/division learning modes, from the basic levels to the most advanced. At each level the associated fact families are also shown. This document, Student Progress Tables (Downloadable), contains additional information about these tables and this section of a more general document on the ways students can monitor their own progress includes step-by-step instructions on how to download and print these helpful charts.
Can MathFactLab be used for whole group instruction or only individual practice?
While individual student practice is essential for students to make progress in improving their math fact fluency, teachers can utilize MathFactLab's Teaching Tools for instruction when working with individual students, small groups or an entire class. The Teaching Tools feature allows teachers to access and display all of the student strategies at any level. Access Teaching Tools by clicking on the 'Teaching Tools' tab on the teacher dashboard. The interface is very similar to what students will see at any chosen level with a few added features. Teachers can choose the order in which to display problems (Random Order, Numerical Order or Student Mix) and they can use the Close, Back and Skip options to control movement through the levels.
For more information go to the Teaching Tools help guide.
How often and how long should students be using MFL in order to make real growth in their fact fluency?
In general, in order for students to make real growth in their math fact fluency, we recommend that they complete three or more sessions (of at least 10 minutes) per week. Of course, like with most things, the more frequently students are able to practice, the greater the gains they'll make. Teachers employ a number of different strategies. For example, some teachers start the year with daily sessions, to get students as fluent as possible for the remainder of the school year, and then taper off the frequency after six to eight weeks.
Additional student usage recommendations can be found on this document.
How do I respond to teachers who are getting a message that they need to pay for a new account when they try to log-in to our new school/district account?
When this happens it usually means the teacher is logging into a previous MathFactLab account. In order to accept your school/district account invitation, the teachers will first need to delete their old account following the steps in this guide: Deleting a Teacher/Parent Account. If possible, it would be best if all your teachers could be instructed to delete their old accounts before attempting to accept their new school or district invitations.
Is there a way to generate a single login card for one student or login cards for just one class?
At this time you can print login cards for individual classrooms or all the students with MathFactLab accounts in each of your schools but you can not print login cards for individual students. Please see How to Generate Login Cards for details on how to create login cards for one or more classes.
Do you have any documents our teachers can use to explain to parents how their child can use MathFactLab at home?
This letter is intended for parents of students who log into their accounts using a username, password and class code. It includes an English and a Spanish version. The letter contains some details about how the program works and why the school has chosen to use MathFactLab. The letter can be printed and the student's log-in credentials can be written in the allocated space.
If students were set up to log into the program using Google Single Sign-On this is the appropriate letter to send home. It has the same information about MathFactLab but explains how students will get into the program via their Google log-in.
